The Royal Oak

35 North St, Pewsey SN9 5ES, UK – 01672 563426

Very welcoming. Good range of beers. Free wifi. No food available when we visited but happy for you to go over the road to the bakery and bring things in. Due to have new owners in a couple of weeks. Hope nothing changes because already perfect!

. Very pleasant folk here at the Royal Oak! Driving across Wiltshire, we spotted this pub at the entrance to the village of Pewsey. You can't miss it! At the back there is a very large car park - very useful in a place like this where you cannot just stop in the street. Lovely friendly bar staff, a pleasant environment too. However we turned up on a Monday, when the kitchen is closed. So a pint and a packet of crisps was all that they could offer us. They suggested that we tried Daisy's Cafe in the High Street, and were very happy for us to leave our car in their car park. Full marks for hospitality, thank you Royal Oak! .

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

The Golden Swan

Wilcot, Pewsey SN9 5NN, UK – 01672 562289

Simple camping in most lovely location. Facilities clean and the publicans very sociable. Make sure you go to the general knowledge quiz on the first Sunday of each month. Really well organised and food - bargain of the century at £2.50.

Stopped here for lunch after biking from Bedwyn along the canal. The gamon, which came with an egg, onion rings, mushrooms and chips, was the best I've had, thick and juicy. Everything cooked well and not greasy. The only negative was the slight doggy smell at first but this was covered up the smell of food as lunch got underway.

The French Horn

Wharf Cottage, Marlborough Rd, Pewsey SN9 5NT, UK – 01672 562443

The food is excellent. It is my favorite pub/restaurant ever. It is usually packed so phone ahead. Highly recommended.

Definitely book, great food and parking with easy access to canal.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!

Woodbridge Inn

North Newnton, Pewsey SN9 6JZ, UK – 01980 630266

We cycled and stayed for 1 nights camping. The site is beautiful with a lovely small river running along the bottom of the field with trout and chub. Fishing is available but is fly fishing only. The curry night in the pub was incredible - all home cooked and 7 choices of curry and a free pint thrown in. The facilities were mediocre at best. One toilet which was clean, 2 showers both clean but one was unusable because there was no light, and the urinals were unusable and full of stale urine. Value for money certainly as it only cost £39 for 2 of us camping and all you can eat curry with a drink. Hopefully they fix the small issues in the facilities as this really was an idyllic spot and lovely people in the pub. 3 stars as the urinals were just atrocious - but pushing 5 if they had fixed that.

If the star rating is for overall experience I would mark it two and a half star as a top mark for the food which has been delicious. A group of 10 of us dined at Woodbridge in on the 7th of August 2014 and we have all enjoyed our meals which were to a very high standard hence compliments to the chef. However the service has been worse than POOR!!!!!!! Miserable looking greetings during which we were told we were going to be seated at two different tables so they can serve us. Tables were so far apart that it didn't feel as though we were same party. We have pulled the tables together ourselves. We have all ordered our drinks (10 non alcoholic drinks mostly coke and lemonade so nothing difficult to prepare) and waited about half an hour for them to arrive. We were served with bread and olives after the drinks arrived which was lovely however no one informed us they were complimentary... The water came in a dirty jug and for the two hours of us being sat there we were not asked once if we were alright for drinks. The waitress asked if she could clear up as two people were still eating and once we have asked for the bill it has never arrived. We had to go to the bar and pay.... The land lady seemed so unhappy and miserable and it has clearly transferred onto the waiting staff who looked just the same. But on this note I may say that I would go back there just for the food as it was delicious however the service part gets minus 5 stars and spoils the overall experience.
